Day 48: Numbers 28-30

(The previous post covered the final numbering of the Israelites and the transfer of authority from Moses to Joshua prior to the Israelites possessing the Promised Land.)

Numbers 28

(This chapter covered the sacrificial procedure.)

1 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

(Verses 2-8: the morning and evening offering.)

2 Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, My oblation, my food for my offerings made by fire, of a sweet savor unto me, shall ye observe to offer unto me in their due season.
3 And thou shalt say unto them, This is the offering made by fire which ye shall offer unto Jehovah: he-lambs a year old without blemish, two day by day, for a continual burnt-offering.

(A continual offering.)

4 The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at even;
5 and the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with the fourth part of a hin of beaten oil.
6 It is a continual burnt-offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savor, an offering made by fire unto Jehovah.
7 And the drink-offering thereof shall be the fourth part of a hin for the one lamb: in the holy place shalt thou pour out a drink-offering of strong drink unto Jehovah.
8 And the other lamb shalt thou offer at even: as the meal-offering of the morning, and as the drink-offering thereof, thou shalt offer it, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto Jehovah.

(Verses 9-10: the Sabbath offering.)

9 And on the sabbath day two he-lambs a year old without blemish, and two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with oil, and the drink-offering thereof:
10 this is the burnt-offering of every sabbath, besides the continual burnt-offering, and the drink-offering thereof.

(Verses 11-15: the monthly offering.)

11 And in the beginnings of your months ye shall offer a burnt-offering unto Jehovah: two young bullocks, and one ram, seven he-lambs a year old without blemish;
12 and three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with oil, for each bullock; and two tenth parts of fine flour for a meal-offering, mingled with oil, for the one ram;
13 and a tenth part of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal-offering unto every lamb; for a burnt-offering of a sweet savor, an offering made by fire unto Jehovah.
14 And their drink-offerings shall be half a hin of wine for a bullock, and the third part of a hin for the ram, and the fourth part of a hin for a lamb: this is the burnt-offering of every month throughout the months of the year.
15 And one he-goat for a sin-offering unto Jehovah; it shall be offered besides the continual burnt-offering, and the drink-offering thereof.

(Verses 16-25: offerings at Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread.)

16 And in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, is Jehovah's passover.

(Feast of Passover)

17 And on the fifteenth day of this month shall be a feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten.

(Feast of Unleavened Bread)

18 In the first day shall be a holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work;
19 but ye shall offer an offering made by fire, a burnt-offering unto Jehovah: two young bullocks, and one ram, and seven he-lambs a year old; they shall be unto you without blemish;
20 and their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil: three tenth parts shall ye offer for a bullock, and two tenth parts for the ram;
21 a tenth part shalt thou offer for every lamb of the seven lambs;
22 and one he-goat for a sin-offering, to make atonement for you.
23 Ye shall offer these besides the burnt-offering of the morning, which is for a continual burnt-offering.
24 After this manner ye shall offer daily, for seven days, the food of the offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto Jehovah: it shall be offered besides the continual burnt-offering, and the drink-offering thereof.
25 And on the seventh day ye shall have a holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work.

(Verses 26-31: offerings at the Feast of Weeks. We also know the Feast of Weeks as the grain harvest and Pentecost.)

26 Also in the day of the first-fruits, when ye offer a new meal-offering unto Jehovah in your feast of weeks, ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work;
27 but ye shall offer a burnt-offering for a sweet savor unto Jehovah: two young bullocks, one ram, seven he-lambs a year old;
28 and their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, three tenth parts for each bullock, two tenth parts for the one ram,
29 a tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs;
30 one he-goat, to make atonement for you.
31 Besides the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering thereof, ye shall offer them (they shall be unto you without blemish), and their drink-offerings.

Numbers 29

(This chapter continued the sacrificial procedure.)

(Verses 1-6: offerings at the Feast of Trumpets, also known as Rosh Hashanah.)

1 And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing of trumpets unto you.
2 And ye shall offer a burnt-offering for a sweet savor unto Jehovah: one young bullock, one ram, seven he-lambs a year old without blemish;
3 and their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, three tenth parts for the bullock, two tenth parts for the ram,
4 and one tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs;
5 and one he-goat for a sin-offering, to make atonement for you;
6 besides the burnt-offering of the new moon, and the meal-offering thereof, and the continual burnt-offering and the meal-offering thereof, and their drink-offerings, according unto their ordinance, for a sweet savor, an offering made by fire unto Jehovah.

(Verses 7-11: offerings on the Day of Atonement, also known as Yom Kippur.)

7 And on the tenth day of this seventh month ye shall have a holy convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall do no manner of work;
8 but ye shall offer a burnt-offering unto Jehovah for a sweet savor: one young bullock, one ram, seven he-lambs a year old; they shall be unto you without blemish;
9 and their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, three tenth parts for the bullock, two tenth parts for the one ram,
10 a tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs:
11 one he-goat for a sin-offering; besides the sin-offering of atonement, and the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering thereof, and their drink-offerings.

(Verses 12-39: offerings at the Feast of Tabernacles.)

12 And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto Jehovah seven days:
13 and ye shall offer a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto Jehovah; thirteen young bullocks, two rams, fourteen he-lambs a year old; they shall be without blemish;
14 and their meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, three tenth parts for every bullock of the thirteen bullocks, two tenth parts for each ram of the two rams,
15 and a tenth part for every lamb of the fourteen lambs;
16 and one he-goat for a sin-offering, besides the continual burnt-offering, the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.
17 And on the second day ye shall offer twelve young bullocks, two rams, fourteen he-lambs a year old without blemish;
18 and their meal-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, after the ordinance;
19 and one he-goat for a sin-offering; besides the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering thereof, and their drink-offerings.
20 And on the third day eleven bullocks, two rams, fourteen he-lambs a year old without blemish;
21 and their meal-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, after the ordinance;
22 and one he-goat for a sin-offering; besides the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.
23 And on the fourth day ten bullocks, two rams, fourteen he-lambs a year old without blemish;
24 their meal-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, after the ordinance;
25 and one he-goat for a sin-offering; besides the continual burnt-offering, the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.
26 And on the fifth day nine bullocks, two rams, fourteen he-lambs a year old without blemish;
27 and their meal-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, after the ordinance;
28 and one he-goat for a sin-offering, besides the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.
29 And on the sixth day eight bullocks, two rams, fourteen he-lambs a year old without blemish;
30 and their meal-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, after the ordinance;
31 and one he-goat for a sin-offering; besides the continual burnt-offering, the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offerings thereof.
32 And on the seventh day seven bullocks, two rams, fourteen he-lambs a year old without blemish;
33 and their meal-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, after the ordinance;
34 and one he-goat for a sin-offering; besides the continual burnt-offering, the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.

(The Feast of Tabernacles was a feast that lasted seven days.)

35 On the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly: ye shall do no servile work;
36 but ye shall offer a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto Jehovah: one bullock, one ram, seven he-lambs a year old without blemish;
37 their meal-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullock, for the ram, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the ordinance:
38 and one he-goat for a sin-offering, besides the continual burnt-offering, and the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof.

(The eighth day, the day after the Feast of Tabernacles was complete, was also celebrated. God's Plan is the 8th Dispensation, when His Plan will be complete and celebrated in eternity.)

39 These ye shall offer unto Jehovah in your set feasts, besides your vows, and your freewill-offerings, for your burnt-offerings, and for your meal-offerings, and for your drink-offerings, and for your peace-offerings.
40 And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that Jehovah commanded Moses.

(Moses relayed all these instructions to the Israelites.)

Numbers 30

(This chapter covered the keeping of vows.)

1 And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which Jehovah hath commanded.
2 When a man voweth a vow unto Jehovah, or sweareth an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.

(God commanded that the people do what they said they would do.)

(Verses 3-5: a young woman under her father's household. This woman would have still been under the spiritual covering of her father.)

3 Also when a woman voweth a vow unto Jehovah, and bindeth herself by a bond, being in her father's house, in her youth,

(Vows are binding, meaning "covenantal.")

4 and her father heareth her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father holdeth his peace at her; then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.
5 But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth, none of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and Jehovah will forgive her, because her father disallowed her.

(Verses 6-8: a wife under her husband. A married woman would have been under the spiritual covering of her husband.)

6 And if she be married to a husband, while her vows are upon her, or the rash utterance of her lips, wherewith she hath bound her soul,
7 and her husband hear it, and hold his peace at her in the day that he heareth it; then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.
8 But if her husband disallow her in the day that he heareth it, then he shall make void her vow which is upon her, and the rash utterance of her lips, wherewith she hath bound her soul: and Jehovah will forgive her.
9 But the vow of a widow, or of her that is divorced, even everything wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand against her.

(A woman widowed or divorced was responsible for her own vows. Interesting that widowed and divorced were treated the same.)

(Verses 10-16: a wife whose husband was not in disagreement with her vows.)

10 And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath,
11 and her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not; then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
12 But if her husband made them null and void in the day that he heard them, then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; and Jehovah will forgive her.
13 Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.
14 But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day, then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he hath established them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them.
15 But if he shall make them null and void after that he hath heard them, then he shall bear her iniquity.
16 These are the statutes, which Jehovah commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between a father and his daughter, being in her youth, in her father's house.

(The requirements in this entire chapter on vows were a benefit to the woman. Any woman who was under the covering of her father or husband was protected through that covering. This would have caused the man who "held" that covering to be more intentional about hearing from God for the benefit of the woman or he may have had to answer to God for her himself.)

(This post covered God's instructions, just before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, concerning offerings and vows.)

Day 49

  1. How does this look with The body (The Bride) and the Trinity. Does He come to make null and void are oaths and vows? What would this look like?

  2. As a Body, we've only made one oath: marriage to Jesus through the Holy Spirit (who is the "earnest" from Ephesians 1:13-14)

  3. 30:15

    It sounds to me that this verse could be read as “But if her husband shall cause her to break her vows or her bond that she made, after he has heard them, he shall bear the weight of her transgression.”

    1. I don't see how it says he "causes her to break her vows." I see it more like the husband telling the wife, "You no longer have to keep your vow." Then if she DID break the vow, it would be charged against the husband.
